End of Term 2 Reflection

• Children are being re-assessed by the Spring in to Maths teacher using the GloSS and JAM assessment tools
• We are waiting for the assessment data to be analysed and reported back to classroom teachers
• Looking at the current data collected by Deb and myself we have looked at the number knowledge - basic facts, strategical thinking four multiplication and division to see which the shift from one level to the next.
• It is evident that 50% of the students (7 out of 14) have improved their level of achievement.
• To continue to support these students we will

1. The reciprocal teaching strategy needs to be timetabled in for effective use as the children really enjoy this.  Research shows that this is beneficial
2. Maths Buddy is working well.  The children can independently do this during a maths lesson.  This is carried out daily.  Kowhai will implement this next term.
3. Buddy maths has worked well in Kowhai.  The children definitely learn from each other and can tell each other which strategy they have used to find their answer.
4. Visual cues to be used to show different addition and subtraction strategies so that the children can refer to these when necessary.
5. To use maths games from the Spring in to Maths Programme in the classroom to reinforce what has been learnt with Hannah

Early next term Deb and I will look at the data to observe any changes in National Standard levels involving the 14 students who are being supported and monitored.

  

Week 8

SPRING Students are using the programme Maths Buddy Daily to upskill and practise using strategies with Fractions. Many of you increased your basic facts levels because of your hard work and practise-                   
              congratulations!!

Term 2 - PLG Meeting for Maths

Tuesday 5th May

Nikau

Deb and I attended a meeting run by Hannah, our numeracy co-ordinator.  

I found this meeting really informative and learnt a lot of new games that can be incorporated in to in our maths programmes to help the identified students with their basic facts.

Hannah also took us through the SPRING in to Maths Programme which some of the identified children are currently participating in.

We talked about using the PAT maths testing and how to use the NZCER website to identify where children's knowledge is lacking.  In particular what number and strand knowledge.  

Hannah also provided us with the materials so that we use the games in our classroom as well.

Deb asked what children should be doing when they are not in a guided maths  with the teacher.  They should be involved in games, or something practical rather than a worksheet.

Buddy or reciprocal teaching has started.  We talked about how the children have been paired up and what strategies or questions are being covered during this introduction to the lesson.

We will be meeting again in Week 9 to see how the children have progressed.

  

Term 2 Totara

Our reciprocal teaching for Maths is under way. The students are enjoying sharing their knowledge as well as reinforcing skills for themselves.

MATHS BUDDIES

This week in Kowhai we have started 

MATHS BUDDIES.

This involves the buddies teaching each other what they have learnt from their 

Maths Group Work with the teacher.
